Boxing News: As both boxers came from the canvas in a spectacular encounter in New York, George Kambosos Jr. wins by split decision to become the new unified WBA, IBF, and WBO lightweight champion.

After a tense bout, George Kambosos Jnr defeated Teofimo Lopez with a relentless onslaught to become the new unified lightweight champion by split decision.

The Australian felled Lopez in the first round and was then dropped himself in the tenth, but his relentless onslaught earned him a surprising victory with scores of 115-112 and 115-111, respectively, with a third judge scoring it 114-113 for Lopez.

Lopez’s run as one of the sport’s elite champions came to an end last year when he defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko, with Kambosos Jnr pulling off a stunning victory in a battle that had been delayed multiple times.

In a tense first round at Madison Square Garden in New York, Kambosos Jnr knocked Lopez to the canvas with a straight hand.

In the frantic early rounds, Lopez struggled to restrain the motivated Kambosos Jnr, who retaliated with a barrage of punches.

In the ninth, Kambosos Jr. deflected a flurry of right hands with a powerful left hook, and he immediately recovered from a knockdown in the tenth when Lopez delivered a chopping right hand.

In the 11th, a cut above Lopez’s left eye briefly halted the action, but Kambosos Jnr continued his relentless attack until the final bell to record a historic victory.
