Boxing News: Frank Sanchez, who has made an ‘amazing rise’ towards a world title fight, would be Tyson Fury’s first defeat, according to the Cuban’s manager Mike Borao.
Sanchez is within striking distance of WBC champion Fury, having risen to No. 6 in the WBC rankings with 19 wins, including 14 in his first two years of professional boxing.
The 29-year-old trains in Eddy Reynoso’s camp alongside Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and might take another step toward a world title bout when he fights Carlos Negron in Florida on New Year’s Day.
Borao said Sky Sports, “Frank Sanchez is one of the most active high-profile fighters today.”
“Frank was the co-main event for Fury vs Wilder III, has appeared on Canelo’s pay-per-view fights, and is presently the co-main event for Charles Martin vs Luis Ortiz.”
“His meteoric rise, as well as his unquestionable talent, have been remarkable.”
“I hope Frank Sanchez beats Tyson Fury tonight,” Borao said when asked if Sanchez could pose a threat to Fury.
Fury wants to fight again in early 2022, but the WBC has yet to choose Dillian Whyte as his mandatory challenger, leaving him without a solid opponent for a quick comeback.
“I’m not really intrigued,” he told Sky Sports over the weekend, “because to be honest, it doesn’t really make much sense who I want to face right now.”
“It’s a matter of who’s accessible and what makes sense in the long run.”
On the undercard of Tyson Fury’s spectacular knockout victory over Deontay Wilder, Sanchez established himself as a serious contender by thrashing fellow unbeaten competitor Efe Ajagba in a convincing points victory.
Borao, who also handles Charles Martin’s career and advises Robert Helenius, feels that if Sanchez continues on his current path, he will be impossible to avoid.
“Tyson is no fool, so don’t expect a voluntary defence against Frank any time soon – he’ll have to force the issue by defeating people like Efe Ajagba and working toward the mandatory,” Borao added.
“At Frank’s present rate, I have no doubt he will quickly become the No. 1 contender.”
“Frank Sanchez will become heavyweight champion the day he gets the chance to fight for a world belt.
“In my ideal scenario, in 2022, Charles Martin wins the IBF, Robert Helenius wins the WBA, and Frank Sanchez wins the WBC or WBO world titles.”
“One thing is certain: I’m going to give it everything I’ve got to deliver for them.”
