Boxing News: According to promoter Bob Arum, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s next bout might be against the formidable Artur Beterbiev.
Beterbiev, who is undefeated, will defend his WBC and IBF light-heavyweight belts, as well as his perfect knockout ratio, against Marcus Browne.
He might become a target for Canelo Alvarez, the pound-for-pound king who is climbing the weight ladder in quest of more daring challenges.
Canelo has indicated interest, according to Top Rank promoter Arum, who represents Beterbiev: “Yes, indeed. I’m sure he would.
“Eddy Reynoso is a fantastic trainer who is close friends with Canelo.
“Canelo is someone I’ve known since he was a young man.
“He has expressed interest in facing Beterbiev or Joe Smith Jr. in the past.
“I’d expect Canelo to fight one of those light-heavyweights in May or September, the two dates on which he prefers to fight.”
Canelo is a four-weight world champion who has been granted permission by the WBC to fight cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu in a fifth category.
But, with Makabu also scheduled to defend his WBC title against Thabiso Mchunu, Arum has raised doubts about Canelo’s ability to pull off a difficult fight.
“I believe they’ll have to abandon it,” he predicted.
Canelo has already fought in the light-heavyweight division, defeating Sergey Kovalev and winning the WBO title.
Taking on Beterbiev, who is in his prime and has defeated every opponent he has ever faced, is a far more difficult challenge.
Beterbiev demonstrated his threat by defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk, a world champion at the time who was also undefeated.
“Canelo is a risk-taker, which is why he’s so popular,” Arum remarked.
“Because the betting action would flow both ways, it would be a huge fight.
“Some may believe Beterbiev is excessively large and powerful. Others will argue that Canelo is unique and capable of handling any situation.
“It’s one of boxing’s biggest fights.”
