Boxing Match: Tyson Fury has advised Anthony Joshua to adjust his strategy for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk and to “swing away.”
Fury’s chances of facing Joshua for the undisputed heavyweight title were shattered when Joshua was defeated by Usyk over the weekend.
“There are no secrets, no rocket science in boxing,” Fury has now advised Joshua.
“Today’s fighters make it technical. This is nothing more than two men punching each other for 12 rounds or less.
“Go to bed early, eat right, drink plenty of water, and get involved in! If your game plan isn’t working, what should you do? Switch it up!
“Give it your all, everything you’ve got, and leave it all in the ring. Don’t use words like should have,’ ‘would have,’ or ‘could have.’
“Don’t think to yourself, ‘If I had trained harder, I could have done better.’
“My suggestion to Joshua is to get stuck the best way he can! Make an effort to put your best foot forward. Swing, swing, swing!”
Joshua has ‘activated in principle’ a rematch clause, according to Usyk, the new IBF, WBA, and WBO champion.
Fury will defend his WBC title against Deontay Wilder on October 9 in Las Vegas, capping off their trilogy clash.
He, however, refrained to criticise Joshua for relinquishing his title reign.
“I have no interest in slapping or kicking someone when they’re down,” Fury stated. “It isn’t my style.
“I like to target people who are doing well, who are successful, who are at the top of their game.
“I don’t like picking on people who are depressed, perhaps at their lowest point, and most likely mentally unstable after a lengthy reign.
“Joshua must carry out his responsibilities. I can’t say I’m interested because I’m about to watch ‘The Bronze Bomber.’ Who will be the next? We’ll deal with them as well.
“I can’t think about what happened in previous fights. All I can think about is myself.”
Fury knocked Wilder out cold in their rematch after they fought to a draw the first time.
Wilder has since claimed that his ring-walking costume wore him out, that Fury’s gloves were unlawfully loaded (which the WBC refuted), and that his then-trainer Mark Breland was “disloyal.”
“It made him less of a man, less of a character,” Fury said of the allegations. If you are beaten, shake the man’s hand and walk away.
“Many combatants have died. Both Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson were defeated in their contests. It’s what they do after they lose that defines them.
“Some folks have to make up an excuse when they lose.”
“I will go all-out attack, full inventory, from round one till it concludes,” Fury said of the third fight with Wilder.
Is Fury vs. Joshua still a possibility?
“It’s always a possibility since both boxers have a lot of fans,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef told Sky Sports. “Both fighters have people connected to them.
“As long as athletes have a fan base, matches can always be set up.”
“Obviously, a lot relies on whether Joshua chooses to use his rematch clause, and if he does, and Fury beats Wilder, there are other choices for Tyson’s next fight,” Arum added.
