Boxing: In a ninth-round stoppage in Montreal on Friday night, Artur Beterbiev overcame a horrific cut to put an end to Marcus Browne’s ambitions.

After an inadvertent clash of heads in the fourth round, the dangerous IBF and WBC light-heavyweight champion received a wound in the centre of his forehead.

When the referee advised him at the start of the fifth round that he might only be permitted one more round due to the cut, his undefeated record was jeopardised.

But Beterbiev gained control of the battle and knocked out his opponent twice before finishing him in the ninth round.

In his 17th battle, Beterbiev retained his incredible record as the only world champion in the sport with a perfect knockout record.

After the referee threatened to stop the fight in the fifth round, he was able to boost the tempo and save his reign.

By this time, Browne had succumbed to Beterbiev’s assault.

Browne nearly avoided crumpling to the ground in the sixth round’s final exchange.

With blood streaming down his face, Beterbiev went for the knockout in the seventh round, sending Browne to the ground with a body punch and a right hand.

Browne was knocked down again in the ninth round by a left uppercut, and he was unable to evade the referee’s count.

Beterbiev is still the unified light-heavyweight champion and one of boxing’s most powerful punchers.

In the light-heavyweight division, he faces world champions Dmitry Bivol (WBA) and Joe Smith Jr. (WBO).
