Boxing: Gennadiy Golovkin’s world title fight has been postponed, which could affect Chris Eubank Jr.’s ambitions to face the Kazakh star in 2022.
Golovkin was preparing for an IBF and WBA middleweight unification bout against Ryota Murata in Saitama on December 29, but the fight has been postponed due to additional travel restrictions in Japan due to Covid-19.
“I am really unhappy that the fight in Japan has been postponed,” ‘GGG’ said on Twitter, “but the health and safety of the public must always be the priority.”
“I’m eager to get back in the ring with Ryota as soon as possible.”
On January 29, Chris Eubank Jr will meet Liam Williams in a rescheduled British bout in Cardiff.
If he wins, Eubank Jr will become the mandatory challenger for the WBA title, and he has expressed interest in fighting Golovkin next year.
Eubank Jr told Sky Sports, “I’m the most entertaining fighter in the weight category.” “It needs to happen because I’m the boxer that the people want to see in the ring with these men.
“I’ve been visualising it for years and I’m confident in my ability to defeat him. All I have to do now is wait for the opportunity, which is on its way.
“It can’t be anything less than an epic battle between my and his techniques.
“He has no idea how to fight backwards, and I have no idea how to quit firing punches.
“When you combine those two approaches, you’ve got yourself a famous boxing bout.”
Murata’s promoter, Bob Arum, has even stated that if Murata defeats Golovkin, the Japanese fighter may face Eubank Jr next.
“I’m sure the Eubank Jr fight is highly appealing to GGG if he succeeds,” Arum told Sky Sports.
