Boxing Fight: After flooring Ghanaian Richard Commey during a decisive points victory in New York, Vasiliy Lomachenko explained why he encouraged Commey’s camp to end the fight.
During the battle at Madison Square Garden, the Ukrainian star floored Commey in the seventh round and then motioned for Commey’s training team to intercede.
But Commey was allowed to continue as Lomachenko won by unanimous decision, putting him back in line for a world title shot.
“I was aware of his predicament,” Lomachenko said. “It was quite difficult for him.” That’s why I said, ‘Hey, let’s put an end to this battle.’
“But he’s a true warrior with a lot of heart, so we kept going and showed 12 tremendous rounds.”
Andre Rozier, Commey’s trainer, believed that the former IBF champion had justified his choice not to stop the fight.
Rozier remarked, “Richard is a fighter, and Vasiliy is a terrific champion.”
“It would have been a terrible thing for me to take away his [Commey] dignity, his enthusiasm, and his determination when he signalled to stop.
“Richard, I urged him, get up and let’s get this party started. Continue to work and avoid making any blunders. As you can see, he fought his heart out for the entire 12 rounds of this fight.”
Lomachenko is now slated to face new unified champion George Kambosos Jnr, who won the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles from Teofimo Lopez in a shock victory last month.
Lomachenko had previously held all three world titles until losing to Lopez by unanimous decision.
“We have a lot of great fighters in this weight division,” Lomachenko added.
“We have a large number of quality fighters, so we can put on a lot of exciting fights.
“Of course, I require this opportunity [to become the undisputed champion].” I’ll take this chance if God offers it to me.”
“I will go everywhere I need to go to face him [Kambosos],” Lomachenko said when asked if he would go to Australia for the Kambosos fight.
“I’ve stated my objective. World lightweight champion without a doubt. I maintain a weight of 135 pounds and require four belts.”
