Boxing Fight: Tyson Fury has warned Oleksandr Usyk that his plans to become the undisputed heavyweight champion will be thwarted.
On Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Usyk will face Anthony Joshua for the IBF, WBA, and WBO belts.
If Fury defeats Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas on October 9, he can stay on track for a blockbuster fight against the winner of this weekend’s fight.
“Usyk does not aspire to be uncontested. He’s thinking about it “Alexander Krassyuk, his publicist, told Sky Sports.
“The Fury bout has never been under discussion,” he added.
Negotiations between Joshua and Fury to create a summer mega-fight between the two incumbent heavyweight champions to determine one undisputed king fell through, but that might change if they survive their respective perilous defences.
Fury’s promoters are well aware of Usyk’s potential to derail such plans.
“I can’t speak for Tyson, but I’ll be watching Joshua vs Usyk,” said Bob Arum, who promotes Fury in the United States for Top Rank.
“I’ve spent a lot of time with Usyk since he’s close friends with Vasiliy Lomachenko, and he’s a nice young man and a fantastic boxer.”
“However, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Tyson Fury is the best heavyweight in the world.”
Usyk, who is undefeated, is attempting to become only the third boxer, after Evander Holyfield and David Haye, to win a world title at cruiserweight and heavyweight.
After winning the World Boxing Super Series event, he was the undisputed cruiserweight champion.
“We’ll probably find out in the first round if power or skill will triumph,” Usyk remarked of being substantially lighter than Joshua.
“No, it doesn’t irritate me [size inquiries], certainly not.”
“As I said, a lot of people don’t know, see, or understand a lot of things.”
“In my mind, I’ve erased the conversation that he’s a cruiserweight,” Joshua added.
