Boxing Fight: Oscar De La Hoya was scheduled to fight Vitor Belfort on September 11 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but the 48-year-old is now recovering from Covid-19; Evander Holyfield will now face Belfort the following Saturday.

Oscar De La Hoya has withdrawn from his bout against Vitor Belfort next weekend in Los Angeles due to coronavirus infection.

On Friday, the 48-year-old confirmed the news by posting a video from his hospital bed to his social media platforms.

The fight against former UFC champion Belfort on September 11 would have marked the Hall of Fame boxer’s first comeback to the ring since 2008.

Before getting COVID-19, De La Hoya said he had been properly vaccinated.

In a short video, De La Hoya asked, “What are the possibilities of me obtaining COVID?”

“I’ve been taking care of myself, and this has truly knocked my socks off.”

He added the following to his Twitter post: “I wanted to let you know that despite being completely vaccinated, I have contracted Covid and will be unable to compete next weekend.

“Over the last few months, preparing for this comeback has meant everything to me, and I want to express my gratitude to everyone for their unwavering support.

“I’m now in the hospital receiving treatment, but I expect to be back in the ring by the end of the year. God bless you everyone and keep you safe.”

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, 58, has agreed to battle Belfort, 44, but it is uncertain whether the match would take place in Los Angeles or in Florida.

Holyfield last fought in 2011, winning by TKO over Brian Nielsen, while De La Hoya last fought in 2008, losing to Manny Pacquiao.
