Boxing Fight: Despite seeing Oleksandr Usyk’s “brilliance” versus Anthony Joshua, Frazer Clarke is confident he can become a future world heavyweight champion.
Clarke is likely to announce the start of his professional career after winning a bronze medal in super-heavyweight at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics.
He was ringside for Usyk’s brilliant points win against Anthony Joshua at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, so the 30-year-old has already studied two of the finest fighters in his new category.
“It certainly whets the appetite.” Clarke told Sky Sports News, “They’re two excellent fighters.”
“AJ has taken boxing to the next level with what he’s done in the last three years.”
“To witness Usyk’s genius as well.” It truly opened my eyes to a few things. You must be extremely talented. To be the world heavyweight champion currently, you must be extremely talented.
“I think it’s now about concentration and getting back into the gym.” I’m working on improving my game.
“I don’t see why it can’t be me if I listen to the right people and do the right things.”
Clarke received severe cuts during the Olympic tournament, jeopardising his chances of winning gold.
But he still expects to make his professional debut before the end of the year.
“I’m ecstatic,” he said. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and obviously everyone knows my aim was to compete in the Olympic Games.”
“I’ve been there, received my medal, and am currently speaking with a few folks. Considering the next steps.
“At the moment, I’m undecided, but I’m getting close to making a definitive decision, and perhaps I’ll be able to return to the ring soon.
“Walking into that [Tottenham Hotspur] stadium gave me a new sense of purpose. That’s where you want to end up.
“I’d like to return this year. Everyone knows I had an awful haircut.
“I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I’m now meeting with the physicians on a weekly basis. They are watching me and assuring me that I will be fine in no time.”
