Boxing Fight: Chris Eubank Jr’s opponents include the formidable Gennadiy Golovkin, but the British contender is still capable of defeating a world champion, according to George Groves.
Eubank Jr lost to George Groves in their world title fight in 2018, but the 31-year-old contender can stay on track to face a middleweight champion if he defeats Anatoli Muratov on Saturday night.
Golovkin is a fearsome titleholder in a hotly contested category, but Groves believes Eubank Jr has the proper trainer in Roy Jones Jr and the abilities to succeed at the highest level.
“Eubank will fight at middleweight, where you have Jermall Charlo, Erislandy Lara, Demetrius Andrade, Ryota Murata, and Gennady Golovkin,” Sky Sports analyst remarked.
“On his good days, he can give them all a run for their money.” Andrade is a skilled fighter, but Eubank is physically strong and can impose himself if he learns the appropriate strategies.
“Golovkin is one of the greatest middleweights of all time, but Eubank may have caught him at the right time?”
“Charlo is a class act, but he has yet to achieve No. 1 status.”
“I believe Eubank Jr. has a chance if he plays his cards well.” He has a lot of world-class attributes; it’s just a matter of putting them all together and coming up with the correct game plan.”
Groves expects Eubank Jr to show refined skills as well as his relentless aggression after practising with boxing icon Jones Jr.
“Eubank has a world-class engine, tremendous stamina and endurance,” Groves said.
“He has good strength, punch power, and hand speed.” There are a lot of wonderful principles to work with.
“Eubank, he punches neatly and correctly, but he could use a little more variety. An enhancement could be the starting point for an exchange. Working off a jab and being able to create angles and punch off of it.
“When you go to a coach like Jones, he has firsthand knowledge to say, ‘This is how I dealt with this fighter, and these are the shots I would look to get off.’
“Everyone has to admire Roy Jones for his accomplishments.”
Groves claims he never lost faith in his own talent after winning the world title on the fourth try, and he believes Eubank Jr will have the same attitude.
“Eubank Jr. is unquestionably capable of winning a world title.” He believes in himself and has the desire.
“I don’t think Eubank Jr. will be pleased if he doesn’t complete his career with one of the four big world titles, and I believe he has a good chance.”
“As long as you have unflinching self-belief, which I believe he has, and some real difficult resilience, your time will come.”
“I’m confident it won’t take him four tries like it did for me.” I wish him the best.”
