Boxing Fight: According to promoter Eddie Hearn, Oleksandr Usyk is a “dangerous” world title challenger, but Anthony Joshua is ready to exhibit “brutality” and razor-sharp boxing skills.
In a monumental clash between two Olympic gold medalists, Britain’s heavyweight hero defends his WBA, IBF, and WBO belts against Usyk on Saturday.
Joshua has a chance to face Tyson Fury for the undisputed world title next year, but Hearn is well aware of the threat posed by the undefeated Ukrainian.
Eddie Hearn said Sky Sports News, “He has to beat Oleksandr Usyk to keep the undisputed dream alive, and he wasn’t prepared to avoid the challenge of Oleksandr Usyk, he’s not that sort of guy.”
“[Usyk] is unquestionably one of the world’s top five heavyweights. The fact that he could be the world’s No. 1 heavyweight is terrifying. You can trace your lineage back to world-class cruiserweights who have advanced to heavyweight. You make reference to Evander Holyfield. It took a couple of battles for the division to see him as a legitimate danger.
“Usyk has already fought Witherspoon and Chisora. ‘Has he got it, hasn’t he?’ people are asking. Maybe he does now! I hope he doesn’t, but it’s possible.
“It’s also a huge mental battle. One of Usyk’s most terrifying characteristics is his mind, and his ability to analyse and out-think opponents. AJ wants to demonstrate both his skill and his cruelty in this battle. I just hope we get to see a little more savagery.”
This Saturday, Joshua will seek to achieve another career-defining victory over a highly respected opponent in front of a crowd of over 60,000 spectators at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“I assure you, the atmosphere, the noise, and the spectacle that they will see will astound both of them,” Hearn remarked.
“I’m nervous, which is a good indicator for viewers and fans because this is going to be amazing.”
“However, I don’t believe it comes down to how these guys deal with the situation during fight week.” It all boils down to a fight.
“Will AJ be able to establish his jab and size?” Is it possible for him to start putting dents in Oleksandr now? Can Usyk find a rhythm in this battle and use the ring and mobility to his advantage?
“When you can discuss the battle all day, you know you’ve got a cracker.”
