Boxing Championship: In 2021, former world champion Parker defeated Britain’s Derek Chisora twice to re-establish himself in the heavyweight class; the winner of a potential fight between Hrgovic and Parker might face the winner of Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
In the race to meet Filip Hrgovic in a high-stakes world heavyweight title eliminator, Joseph Parker has pulled ahead of Luis Ortiz.
Following Ortiz’s victory over former world champion ‘Prince’ Charles Martin on Saturday, Hrgovic challenged the Cuban to a battle to determine who will be the mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk’s IBF championship.
Former world champion Parker, who beat Derek Chisora for the second time in 2021 last month to improve his career record to 30-2, has emerged as Hrgovic’s most likely opponent.
In a rematch against Anthony Joshua, Usyk is anticipated to defend the IBF, WBA, and WBO heavyweight championships he won from the Brit in September, meaning the winner of that contest would have to defend their title against the winner of Hrgovic and Parker.
Prior to Ortiz’s horrific victory over Martin in Florida, Martin and Hrgovic were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.
Ortiz, 42, was knocked down twice by Martin before winning by stoppage in the sixth round, improving his record to 33-2, with both of his losses coming to former world champion Deontay Wilder.
Hrgovic, who has a perfect 14-0 record in 14 fights, has been frustrated in his search for a final eliminator opponent.
Kalle Sauerland, the Croatian’s promoter, is ready to begin negotiations whenever the IBF orders a fight.
Parker became a world champion in 2016 when he defeated Andy Ruiz Jr to win the vacant WBO belt. The New Zealander successfully defended his title twice before succumbing to Joshua in 2018 and then to Dillian Whyte later that year.
