Boxing Championship: Boxing’s No. 1 champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, is well-known, but who could pose the greatest threat to him? The Panel has reached a decision…
This year, Canelo became the undisputed super-middleweight champion, extending his reign of dominance, and the four-weight king will now seek a new test in 2022.
But, in a dangerous shift to cruiserweight or a risky return to light-heavyweight, might the pound-for-pound great suffer a shocking setback?
It’s fantastic that Canelo is pushing himself in every way possible. For me, Canelo is an example of “enjoy him while he’s here,” because he’s a one-of-a-kind fighter.
At light-heavyweight, Artur Beterbiev is a dangerous opponent. He overcame a bad cut to keep his knockout streak going against Marcus Browne on Sky Sports this month.
Canelo may face the greatest challenge from Oleksandr Usyk, who has returned to cruiserweight. Yes, Canelo can beat Ilunga Makabu for the world title, but if Usyk loses weight, he has already established himself to be the absolute monarch of the division.
From middleweight to light-heavyweight, I don’t see anyone beating Canelo. Because he’s a beast and has proven himself to be a good fighter, Beterbiev could be a threat.
Canelo will face a more difficult test if he is unable to control and repel a fighter with his speed and power. Someone who is willing to take what Canelo has to offer in exchange for their own heavy blows.
Canelo may go too far in the weight categories and end up being his own worst enemy. There are fighters that I believe are too big and powerful for Canelo. It’s tough to ever bet against Canelo, but there are still certain opponents that pose a threat to him.
There’s also the matter of his first fight, which finished in a draw against Gennadiy Golovkin. If Canelo ever returns to the middleweight division, GGG remains a threat.
Any of the top competitors at light-heavyweight, and especially at cruiserweight, might pose a challenge to Canelo. You never know if Oleksandr Usyk will return to cruiserweight, but he has his sights set on the world’s most prestigious class, heavyweight. However, I believe Usyk would defeat Canelo. He’s just too large and capable for him.
Canelo’s biggest threat is his size and weight. If he moves up to cruiserweight, he will face formidable opponents. Canelo might face Ilunga Makabu next, and while some say he’ll have an easy time of it, he won’t. Makabu is a punching bag. I know he’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he’s still a huge guy who smashes hard and is tough.
But, if Canelo moves up to light-heavyweight, I am confident that he can defeat Artur Beterbiev. Dmitry Bivol is someone who might make him uncomfortable. Bivol is a solid shooter with good legs who could pose a threat to Canelo. Those light-heavyweight contenders pose a threat, but I believe Canelo will prevail.
Canelo may be his own worst enemy. By jumping up to cruiserweight, he might be biting off more than he can chew. As a former cruiserweight, I’m a little offended that this small guy has moved up to our weight class. ‘No, that’s not going to happen!’ will exclaim any respectable cruiserweight.
That’s why fighters like Oleksandr Usyk are willing to drop to cruiserweight to show their point. There will be a number of cruiserweights, such as Makabu, who can be defeated. Other cruiserweights, on the other hand, Canelo should never beat in a million years. Canelo’s greatest foe maybe himself.
To get Canelo’s respect, you’ll need power, but I don’t think that’ll be enough. Canelo is so smart and talented that I don’t think anyone will be able to beat him, especially at super-middleweight.
David Benavidez is a super-middleweight who fights in the light-heavyweight division. He’s a well-trained fighter, but he has to improve his discipline. For the Canelo fight, you’ll need a lot of discipline.
