Boxing: According to promoter Ben-Shalom, Chris Eubank Jr felt something weird’ had caused the short delay in his grudge match versus Liam Williams.
Eubank Jr’s bout with fierce rival Williams was originally scheduled for December 11, but the Welshman experienced a recurrence of a shoulder ailment, forcing the middleweights to reschedule their battle for January 29 at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff.
Ben-Shalom, who promotes the massive British fight in collaboration with Wasserman Boxing, has disclosed how Eubank Jr expressed doubts about Williams before the bout was rescheduled just a few weeks later.
“Chris absolutely felt there was something unusual going on with Liam Williams,” Shalom told Sky Sports.
“We’ve now seen the medical reports,” says the narrator.
“To be honest, I believe Liam is well aware that this is the most important fight of his career. He just wanted to make sure he was 100 per cent ready for what will be a tremendous, huge fight in front of his home people in Cardiff.
“Chris may believe something is wrong, but I tell you there isn’t.
“Liam Williams will be fully fit for the 29th of January.” We’re overjoyed. We didn’t want to watch this drag on indefinitely.”
Eubank Jr, according to Nisse Sauerland of Wasserman Boxing, who promotes the 32-year-old, is much more eager to defeat Williams.
Sauerland told Sky Sports, “Of course Chris was disappointed by the injury.”
“The good news is that he won’t have to wait long.” He is well aware of this.
“It provides him a little more time with Roy Jones Jr, his trainer, to prepare for the fight.” I think he’ll be even more hungry after some more sparring and trying out some new stuff.
“It’ll be a great way to start the year off, and I think it’ll be a fantastic fight.”
“They’re just going to attack.” At the press conference, Liam Williams stated that he intends to jab and move against Chris, but I don’t see it happening.
“It’s going to be a full-fledged battle, and I don’t think it’ll go the distance.”
Claressa Shields will defend her WBC, WBA, and IBF middleweight titles against Ema Kozin on the Eubank versus Williams card in January, despite having to wait a little longer for her UK debut.
Shields’ victory keeps her on track for a world title match against Savannah Marshall later in 2022.
According to Shalom, who talked to Sky Sports, “‘Do you want to stay on?’ we asked the majority of the better fighters on the undercard. ‘Would you like to fight?’
“They are well aware of the significance of this card.
“Claressa Shields, maybe the best female boxer in the world at the moment.
“It’s her UK debut, and she wanted to be on a large stage, so it was a no-brainer when we gave her the option a few weeks later.
“She can’t wait; it’s going to be a huge night in Cardiff,” says the narrator.
