Boxing: According to promoter Bob Arum, Tyson Fury will return to the ring in April against Dillian Whyte or Joe Joyce in the United Kingdom.

Fury destroyed Deontay Wilder to end their historic rivalry and become the unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion and the division’s consensus No. 1 contender.

Oleksandr Usyk dethroned Anthony Joshua for the IBF, WBA, and WBO belts, and they are set to rematch in early 2022, forcing Fury to search elsewhere for his next opponent.

“Who Fury fights next will be selected by Fury,” said Top Rank’s Arum, who promotes the WBC champion in the US.

“If the fight is held in the United Kingdom, I believe Whyte and Joyce are viable contenders.”

Whyte withdrew from a bout against Otto Wallin scheduled for Saturday due to a shoulder ailment, but he still has the WBC interim heavyweight title and is hoping for his first world title shot versus Fury.

Before Whyte backed out of fighting Wallin, the WBC warned Fury would have to face the interim champion if he couldn’t agree on a bout for the undisputed gold with Usyk.

Whyte has urged the World Boxing Council to “push my position.”

Arum believes Fury vs. Whyte would be “extremely appealing in the UK,” but he is waiting for word from the WBC on the Brixton man’s status and availability to contend for the WBC belt.

Arum adds Fury’s other choice is unbeaten Joyce, who has stopped Daniel Dubois and Carlos Takam in his previous two fights. Fury and Joyce are both promoted by Frank Warren in the United Kingdom.

Arum feels Fury should fight in his hometown next: “It is critical that Tyson, who has fought in the United States for the past five years, returns to the United Kingdom for a bout.

“He’s a Brit, he has a lot of supporters in the UK, and if he fights in the UK and then returns to the US, he’ll bring 10,000 Brits with him.

“American fans must learn to sing in the manner of the British!”

He further on the discussions for Fury’s return: “Frank Warren is heading to Manchester to meet with Fury to set up a date. It could be in March or April, but it cannot be later than April.

“Even if the fight took place in the UK, a date in the middle of April would be interesting to us in the US since we have a college basketball tournament called March Madness that the country loves. Finding a date for a major fight [around March Madness] is difficult.

“We’ll figure out who Tyson will fight next and when.”

The fantasy undisputed title battle to proclaim the division’s king is now between Fury and Usyk, yet Joshua may reclaim his belts if he wins the rematch.
