Boxing News: Has Oleksandr Usyk gained 15 kg for his rematch with Anthony Joshua?

Boxing News: For his rematch with Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk seems to have put on muscular mass.

Usyk is the smaller man who, despite being the uncontested champion at 200 pounds, increased his weight to defeat Joshua in 2017.

He managed Anthony Joshua’s height and reach advantages in their first fight in September at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, but there are indications he has put on extra weight in preparation for the rematch.

Amir Khan, a famous British actor, visited Usyk in Dubai while he was training for the match on Saturday.

Khan claimed: “He put on an extra 15kgs and looked tremendous.”

Usyk hasn’t exactly said how much extra weight he may have put on, but it’s possible. Only the weigh-in on Friday will decide that.

The champion’s conditioning certainly made an impression on Khan, though. “After seeing him work out, he impressed me,” Khan said.

“Usyk looked in great shape. He said he’s focused and ready and is very confident.”

It does affect the battle on Saturday if you gain weight. Usyk’s quickness, flexibility, and agility were so important in his triumph over Joshua the previous year.

So, this weekend’s competition will be unpredictable. Who wins is difficult to predict, Khan continued.

According to Johnny Nelson, a former cruiserweight champion, it suggests that both contestants will attempt a knockout.

“The fact that it looks like he’s coming in heavier, will that be a detriment to his style? I think it will,” Nelson said.

“As a cruiserweight, he had everyone’s number, as a heavyweight he’s going through trying to find his feet. Yes, he beat Anthony Joshua, he struggled but got the win with Derek Chisora. Now he’s filled out even more, will he have the same movement, fluidity, and speed? Will he be able to keep that up for 12 rounds? I’ve never seen him fighting, boxing, looking so heavy.

“His movement and agility have been his godsend so now, things have changed he might be a bit more flatfooted, he might punch harder.

“Naturally, Anthony Joshua is the bigger guy out of the two of them. So now Usyk has artificially put that weight on to challenge Joshua and it looks like both fighters are going for the knockout.”
