According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Kyrie Irving skipped Tuesday’s training session with the Brooklyn Nets owing to New York’s vaccine obligation, and the franchise is still unsure about his plans to be immunised.

There was previously hope that Kyrie Irving would get vaccinated and fulfil local governmental mandates, allowing him to practise and play in New York this season, but the player’s continued resistance to vaccination has the Nets preparing for the possibility that he will miss home training sessions and games for the foreseeable future.

Athletes who play or practise in New York are required to have COVID-19 immunizations.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Kyrie Irving skipped Tuesday’s training session with the Brooklyn Nets owing to New York’s vaccine obligation, and the franchise is still unsure about his plans to be immunised.

If Irving remains unvaccinated, the Nets may soon have to decide whether to allow Irving to travel with the team in and out of New York – or keep him sidelined entirely, according to ESPN.

Following Irving’s absence from training on Tuesday in Brooklyn, Nets coach Steve Nash stated that the organisation will not consider moving practises outside of New York to accommodate him. During the remainder of the preseason, the club will be away from home only once, on Monday, for a game in Philadelphia.

“We stand with him and are here for him. We’ll be there for him when things change and a resolution is reached “Nash stated.

According to Wojnarowski, Irving may be fined $380,000 for each home game he skips under an agreement between the NBA and the NBPA (National Basketball Players Association). This may happen as early as Friday when the Nets host the Milwaukee Bucks. Irving, 29, is under contract for $35.3 million in 2021-22, with a $36.5 million player option for 2022-23.

Irving has not stated whether or not he has been immunised against COVID-19, requesting privacy when asked about his status during the team’s media day on September 27. He did not present in person alongside his teammates at Brooklyn’s home stadium, the Barclays Center, but instead through Zoom.

The Nets held training camp in San Diego last week (with Irving present) and then held their first session at their Brooklyn training facility on Tuesday with everyone but Irving.

The NBA does not require vaccinations, but those who do not are subjected to frequent coronavirus testing and harsh limits on their activity. Players in New York and San Francisco, which will soon implement a similar regulation, will not be compensated for games missed.

The New York Knicks have stated that their whole squad has been vaccinated, and Andrew Wiggins was recently the last of the Golden State Warriors to be given a shot, leaving Irving as the lone player who could face a pay cut due to virus-related reasons.
