Kevin Love understands the rush of hitting a three-pointer right before the final buzzer. However, the five-time NBA All-Star has had his share of lows to balance out his highs.

“On occasion, I don’t want to get out of bed. That is simply the truth “In 2018, the Cleveland Cavaliers power forward spoke about his lifetime battles with depression and low self-esteem.

Love received the annual Morton E. Ruderman Award in Inclusion from the Boston-based Ruderman Family Foundation on Thursday for his work on and off the court to eliminate the stigma around mental illness.

The charity stated in a statement that Love had “repeatedly taken measures to remove the mental health stigma by sharing stories of his difficulties with depression, anxiety, and other problems.” He’s also started the Kevin Love Fund, which aims to benefit more than 1 billion people over the next five years.

Last year, his foundation partnered with UCLA’s psychology department to establish the Kevin Love Fund Chair in order to diagnose, prevent, treat, and de-stigmatize anxiety and depression.

Love, 33, was a member of the gold-medal-winning United States national team in the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 London Olympics.

Love stated he had been seeing a therapist for several months after having a panic attack during a game earlier that year in a 2018 piece for The Players’ Tribune.

He apologised for throwing a tantrum on the court during a game against the Toronto Raptors in April.

“It revolutionised my life when I first went up about my mental health difficulties,” Love remarked on Thursday.

“Athletes from all around the world have demonstrated amazing bravery in recent years by bringing attention to the mental health consequences of extreme pressure. As a result, they contributed to the commencement of a cultural shift around mental health “he stated

Love was chosen for his “important role in destigmatizing mental health and bringing this long-overdue conversation out in the open,” according to Jay Ruderman, president of the Ruderman Family Foundation.

“He has acted as a high-profile role model for numerous people dealing with mental health issues, who may now draw inspiration from his strength and drive,” Ruderman added.
