Basketball news: Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors has been selected head coach of the United States men’s basketball team, and will lead them as they attempt to defend their Olympic gold medal in Paris in 2024.
Kerr has eight NBA championships to his credit as a player and coach, and he served as an assistant coach on the most recent USA team.
Kerr remarked, “I’m very thrilled and humbled to represent our country as the head coach of the USA men’s national basketball team.”
“It’s a fantastic opportunity, and I’m looking forward to the task.”
As assistant coaches, Mark Few of Gonzaga University, Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, and Monty Williams of the Phoenix Suns will round out the US national team coaching staff for 2022-24.
“I’m also ecstatic to work with Erik Spoelstra, Monty Williams, and Mark Few, three coaches I admire tremendously,” Kerr added.
“Coaching the USA Men’s National Team is a huge job that requires a team effort from a group of coaches that are dedicated to the team, the objective, and each other, and I couldn’t ask for a better collection of people to assist me lead our national team.”
“Of course, our goal is to win and bring honour to our country. We’ll put up the effort.”
The men’s team has won four straight Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020), as well as two FIBA World Cup titles in the last three years (2010, 2014).
Since 1992, when the “Dream Team” of NBA stars first competed, US men’s teams have won gold medals in 15 of the 19 major FIBA basketball tournaments, collecting a 146-10 overall record (.936 winning percentage).
