Talks to extend the Barcelona contract for Lionel Messi are set to begin this month. Negotiations for the club will be led by club president Josep Maria Bartomeu himself alongside CEO Oscar Grau, while his father Jorge will represent Messi.
Now, the two parties could start talks on an extension as soon as next week, according to Cope.
The forward will turn 33 in June and he needs to make sure he finishes his Barcelona career in good health, even though he is in good shape at the moment. Messi thus wants to retain the option of rescinding his contract at the end of each season, as is the system currently in place.
These talks, however, will only be preliminary for now, with the main bulk of the negotiations set to take place next season.
Bartomeu has already tried to start negotiations to extend the Argentine deal by 2021 this season, but for various reasons they have been delayed.
