Australian PGA Championship: At Royal Queensland in Brisbane, Cameron Smith defeated Jason Scrivener and Ryo Hisatsune to win by three strokes and win his third Australian PGA championship.

Smith had to wait throughout the final round because the AUD$2m (£1.11m) event was hampered by the rain.

The Australian had been in the lead all weekend, and his 14-under-par 270 total, which included a final-round score of three under par (68), was good for the victory.

Smith’s only birdie on the front nine came at the second hole, but after giving that advantage back with a bogey at the eleventh, he went on to win thanks to birdies at the second, third, and sixteenth holes.

The Open champion previously won back-to-back championships at the competition in 2017 and 2018. He is now back in Australia after a three-year absence due to the Covid epidemic.

“It’s fantastic. At the beginning of the week, I honestly didn’t believe I had it in me “admitted Smith.

With the exception of the front nine today, the game has gotten better and better as the week has progressed.

Smith added: “You are in the mojo a little and for it to be stopped not once but twice was a little frustrating but I just held on and played really solid those last eight holes” when asked about the two weather-related delays in play.
