Aramco Team Series: In Sotogrande, Jessica Korda shoots three eagles to take a five-shot lead

Aramco Team Series: Jessica Korda grabbed a five-shot lead at the Aramco Team Series tournament in Sotogrande by matching the lowest round in Ladies European Tour history and setting a new course record.

On her route to a spectacular 11-under 61 at La Reserva Club Sotogrande, Korda eagled three of the par-five holes and blended six birdies with one bogey, giving her a significant lead over Slovenian Pia Babnik and Belgian Manon De Roey.

The American opened with an eagle at the par-five second hole and then added back-to-back birdies on the following two holes before picking up a stroke at the sixth hole to go to seven under after just seven holes.

Despite losing a stroke at the 404-yard eighth hole, Korda made it to the halfway point in 30 and increased her chances of recording the first “59 round” in Ladies European Tour history by making three birdies in a row starting at the 10th.

“It was an awesome round,” Korda said. “We had a great vibe in the group and so obviously, I was really relaxed. I have never made three eagles in a round, so I’m definitely going to remember this one!”

Korda needed a birdie-birdie finish to shoot a round under 60 after making an eagle at the par-five 16th hole, but instead, she closed with back-to-back pars to stay 11 under for the day.

“It was an awesome round,” Korda said. “We had a great vibe in the group and so obviously, I was really relaxed. I have never made three eagles in a round, so I’m definitely going to remember this one!”

While Linn Grant, a three-time winner this season, is within the top-10 after four birdies in six holes helped her to a three-under 69, Korda’s sister Nelly is on five under and tied for fourth despite making a double-bogey in her opening round 67.

Bronte Law of England is in the group at two under par, and fellow Englishwoman Alice Hewson is one more stroke back. The defending champion Alison Lee is tied for thirty-first after shooting a level-par 72.

Along with a 36-hole team event, a 54-hole individual stroke play competition is being held at the same time. Team Korda currently leads Team Roussin, which is led by Pauline Roussin of France, by one shot.
