According to long-time Barcelona team-mate Xavi, Lionel Messi could stay until he’s almost 40. If Messi reaches certain endurance standards, Xavi even goes as far as expecting to take charge of him as head coach.
Messi could never have been so critical to the ultimate chances of success of the Blaugrana. He scored 24 goals in all competitions until the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to the proceedings.
This season’s six-time Ballon d’Or winner was thus in his usual impressive shape for Barcelona. Accordingly, Xavi believes that Argentina’s star has much left to offer – both for club and globally.
“He still has 5 or 7 very good years left in him.” Xavi said of Messi during an Instagram conversation with Samuel Eto’o, another ex-Barca forward. “He’s taking good care of himself so he will keep playing till he’s 37, 38 or 39. I’m sure he’ll be playing at the Qatar World Cup.”
