Arsène Wenger, former Arsenal boss, has spoken out on the expected changes in the world of football as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi near retirement.
“Football moves on but when they retire, the game will change,” he stated for Metro-reported interview with Talksport. “Never have we seen such players as Messi or Ronaldo. They are players who can create something out of nothing, but they come to an end.”
Juventus star Ronaldo turned 35 back in February, with Barcelona skipper Messi celebrating his 33rd birthday in June. For the past decade, as part of their battle in the history of the greatest ever players in football, the pair has dominated world football and the Balon d’Or.
However, with the pair reaching the end of their glittering careers, Wenger conceded that football in the post-Messi / Ronaldo era will be forced to change:
“We still have a new generation of players, with two successors in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.”
