Andres Iniesta claims scoring the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final helped him rebound from depression and move away from the most painful period in his career.

“I had to suffer many misfortunes in a row, sadly, even if I was very productive at the time,” Iniesta told Bild am Sonntag. “This period is, happily, a thing of the past. Time has made me stronger and happier.”

“It was the most painful time in my career, definitely,” he said. “But then my friend Dani Jarque died in August 2009, which really placed me in such a precarious position that I needed medical assistance.”

He added, “Getting the encouragement of Anna, my then girlfriend and current wife, and of course that of my mother was really helpful for me.”

Iniesta said that the goal against the Netherlands was “the start of the progress.”
