Gabi Fernandez will replace German Burgos will depart his role as Diego Simeone’s assistant coach on the Atletico Madrid bench.
Rafa Sahulquillo, Radio MARCA’s editor-in-chief, announced on Monday afternoon that Gabi will be taking the role of assistant coach from the start of next season, once his contract with Al-Sadd expires on June 30.
It is already known that at the end of the current campaign, former goalkeeper Burgos intends to begin his career as a coach in his own right. After his leaving Atleti, Simeone will be left with a gap in his coaching staff.
Simeone is looking to fill this gap by hiring Gabi. He has complete confidence in the Spaniard following his time as captain.
Gabi doesn’t have his full coaching badges yet, but that won’t be a problem for him to become a key member of Simeone’s new-look backroom team, including Nelson Vivas too.
Having represented Los Colchoneros for several years, Gabi remains a favourite fan and club icon, as well as continues strong in his relationship with Simeone.
While Gabi’s representative, Manolo Garcia Quilon, denied the speculation, time will tell if the pair will continue their relationship once again in a professional capacity.
