Athletic and Real Sociedad Want to Postpone Copa del Ray Finals to Allow Fans to Attend

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has approved Athletic of Bilbao and Real Sociedad of San Sebastian to allow fans to come to the stadium for the finale of Copa del Ray…on one condition.

The two clubs must move the Cup final to a time when the coronavirus will no longer be a threat. In Spain, more than 25,000 people have died from coronavirus so far.

According to the original schedule, the Cup final was scheduled to be played on April 18 in Seville, but the coronavirus pandemic, which hit Spain especially hard, forced the RFEF to suspend all competitions as early as the first half of March.

Spain’s football season is expected to continue in June, but with matches without spectators in the stands.

Athletic and Real Sociedad should meet for the first time in the Cup Finals this season and should be the first Basque final in the history of this competition. Both Cup finalists agree that they do not want to play such an important match in an empty stadium.

“It is the most prestigious trophy in Spanish football, a competition with the highest tradition and therefore deserves a finale with spectators. Therefore, we will take all necessary steps to ensure that the finale is played at the best time, whether in 2020 or 2021, but certainly before the finals of the next Cup”, RFEF reported.

According to epidemiologists, viewers will only be allowed to return to stadiums in Spain next year.
